Potty Party

The girls turn two years old in less than a month. This has really snuck up on me. I mean, they're TWO.

It hit me recently that maybe it was time to start thinking about potty training. Because seriously, I haven't thought about it, worried about it, contemplated it - nothing. I realized that the girls didn't even know what a toilet was. They had never, ever seen anyone use it. I never took them to the bathroom with me. I'm just a private kind of girl like that. I always found a way to go without them, either holding it til naptime or distracting them with television and snacks and going really fast. I now know, maybe that was a mistake.

So a few weeks ago I decided I would start taking them in the bathroom with me. Morning arrives, we all wake up, I say come on girls, Mommy has to go potty!! It's so FUN - wait and see!! Off the three of us go into the bathroom, and as I start to pull down my pajama pants they both start SCREAMING like I'm taking the pants off to smother them with. They are absolutely horrified by the whole thing.

At this point I am pretty sure we have a loooong potty training road ahead of us.

Fortunately, they quickly got over their fear of me disrobing (it is scary, honestly) and started to seem to grasp the concept of the potty. They would even point at it and say "PEE! POOP!" Right, exactly. Geniuses.

Next step I figure (and I'm totally winging it here.... maybe I should read some kind of potty training book. Maybe I should have read one months ago....) is to buy them their own potties. We go to Buy Buy Baby, pick out two very cute ones shaped like frogs. Take them home and I let the girls cover their own potty in stickers with their names on them (ok, well Katie's stickers said Katie but Charlotte's said Princess. They didn't have any that said Charlotte. She can't read, she'll never know).

They love the potties, they love putting the stickers on, they think it's fun to sit on them. Now I'm thinking, this could actually be easy. I am feeling a bit smug. I am MOM OF THE YEAR.

Then Daddy comes home. Looks at the new potties and says, oh, so nice! HATS!!

Takes one and puts it on his head. Hilarity ensues.

Now every time the girls see the potties, they point and yell HATS!! HATS!! And try and put them on their heads.

I tell them, no no! They're POTTIES! Remember? for pee? and poop?

Yes! They say. And Katie yells "POOP HAT!"

Great.

Yep, this potty training thing could be a long road.

Hilarious post. Those pics are adorable! Don't worry yet about training. I was glad I waited until they were 32 months and super OVER-ready. (just pretend that's a word.)

They were huge Elmo fans and we watched Elmo's Potty Time about once a day for 6+ months. Elmo potty trained them. I had very little to do with it. One day A. announced she had to pee, climbed out of the tub, peed in the potty, and climbed back in the tub. That was when I started training.

Good luck!

I of course am NO expert because my baby is still bakin' inside...but maybe take them to the store to pick out their big girl undies! Make a BIG deal out of it too...like you did with their "hats." They should get a kick out of that and it should help with the process. That's what my auntie did with the boys and they were potty trained fairly quickly!

I loved reading your post today and seeing the HAT photos - hilarious. You might want to check out the Baby Signs Potty Training Program - the "All Aboard the Potty Train" DVD is great for younger kids like yours. Free downloads for rewards charts, certificates also available at www.PottyTrainWithBabySigns.com.
Good luck!

We are totally winging it with the potty training over here. We have 2 of those frog potties and now I'm going to ensure that no one mentions the word HAT!!

OMG, HILARIOUS!! Im trying to potty train my son right now so I know exactly what you mean. Those pictures are great and actually had me laugh out loud here in my office. Have you tried the "Once Upon A Potty" video? They have it for boys and girls. It cracks me up everytime we watch it, but Tyler seems to get what its all about when watching.

Good Luck!!!

Oh my goodness Megan! Your girls are too much! Good luck with the pottytraining! Hopefully the potty hats only make it on their heads empty.

Too funny!! And I can't believe how you managed to go to the bathroom without either of them for almost 2 years!!! My youngest is 7 and the minute I go in, she's banging on the door!!! And leave it to Daddy to think the potties are hats!!! I love the pictures!! Give them time, they will get it when they are ready!! Go slow. The big girl panties and the reward system worked for me and my girls, but everyone is different!! Can't wait to see the "first potty pictures"!!!

Awesomeness. Max did tha ttoo. He puts the whole ring on his head and stands in the potty. He does find it hilarious though to flush the toilet. He has yet to actually DO anything in a toilet. They won't pee in their pants forever! Funny post!

Hello! It's been a while since I commented, but I have been keeping up on reading about the girls and I can't believe they are almost 2! I have to say I burst out laughing when you said Katie yelled out Poop Hats! Seriously I was in tears I thought it was hilarious. I have 3 nephews, and one is 3 and in the middle of potty training so I know it's not always a laughing matter, but hey, you've got a great story to tell when they're teenagers. I hope they continue to do well and good luck with the potty training!

My daughter has G/G twins 4 y/o and now a 2 y/o boy. We loved the froggy potties. tried the other kinds with bells and whistles, but these froggys are great with their high sided front. She has one outside by the pool area for those emergencies during summer months. Easy to clean. Your children are adorable. I've followed them for a long time now. Gram

Oh my stars, Thank YOU! What a great post and I am so envious/impressed you made it that long without them seeing you go to the bathroom. I have a herd of kids climbing over me to get to the toilet paper first...awesome.

Hold up a minute. You have twin girls and managed to NEVER have an audience while using the facilities?!?! You, ma'am, are my hero...

I'd like to offer potty-training advice, but I really suck at it. My Oldest took F-O-R-E-V-E-R and my second trained himself.
