Repeat

We have entered the age of repetition.  Every child goes through this, I guess, when they want to watch the SAME thing over and over, eat the same thing, even wear the same thing.  If they like something the first time, they love it the tenth time, and they freaking ADORE it right around the time it makes their mother want to poke her eyes out of her head and run screaming from the house.

Things on constant repeat in our house:

1.  Movies.  It started with Cinderella.  In an attempt to get them to like something else, we showed them Monsters Inc.  We’ve watched Monsters roughly 500 times since.  So we introduced Toy Story.  When I couldn’t stand that anymore, I bought Toy Story2.  At least we now have three movies on rotation.  Charlotte talks about Mike and Sully and Buzz and Cowboy (as she calls Woody) like they’re her best friends.  “Aw, I LOVE MIKE! He’s so CUTE!” she loves to yell.  For those not in the know, this is Mike Wazowski.

wazowski
Charlotte clearly thinks almost EVERYTHING is cute.

2.  Music.  We have a cd that without any help is incredibly annoying.  It’s a Little People cd, which consists of adults trying to sing and sound like children.  Which just bugs me, but the girls love it.  However, they each decided one song on the CD was THEIR song, Katie’s being “The Wheels on the Bus” and Charlotte’s is “Mr. Golden Sun.”  So that is all they want to hear when we ride in the car.  THEIR SONG.  Which means we alternate between two of the world’s most grating songs.  And to make it even better, whichever girl’s song isn’t the one that’s playing whines and complains until it’s over (NOOOOO!! No wheels on the bus Mommy!! MR SUN!  My song now, my song!).  Fun.

3.  Knock Knock Jokes.  This is mostly Katie.  I’m not sure where she even heard them but she loves knock knock jokes.  Except she doesn’t yet understand the concept or the fact that there’s supposed to be a punch line.  So it goes like this:

Katie:  KNOCK KNOCK!!  Mommy, knock knock!
Me:  Who’s there?
Katie: Orange!
Me:  Orange who?
Katie:  dead silence
Me:  Orange who Katie?  How about “Orange you glad it’s Katie!”  Say that next time!
Katie:  more dead silence
Me : Okay Katie?
Katie:  KNOCK KNOCK!!!  Mommy, knock knock!

AND repeat.

She also loves to ‘introduce’ herself to me.  All day.
She says “Hi Mommy! What’s your name?”
I have to say “My name is Megan, what’s your name?”
“My name is Katie!  Nice to meet you!”
It’s cute.  It is.  It’s cute. Well it was cute the first 500 hundred times anyway.

4.  Boo Boos.  I’ve joked that I sometimes feel like I’m living with senior citizens instead of children.  There is a non stop litany of ailments around here.  Boo boos are discussed constantly.  Boo boos that have LONG since healed are still remembered and pointed out (and need a Band Aid, which leads to more complaining because often times someone thinks the Band Aid itself hurts, ow, it’s stuck Mommy, help! help!)  Charlotte at least once a day tells me she needs to go to the doctor.  Reasons for her needing medical attention have included a scraped knee, a hangnail (I actually had to go to the service desk at Costco recently and ask for a Band Aid from their first aid kit because LaLa WOULD NOT SHUT UP about a hangnail, and then when she got it she wouldn’t shut up about the lady giving her a Band Aid), hiccups, a blister on her foot, bumping her hand on the door, burping, sneezing, and being cold.

The girls had an eye doctor appointment recently and they talked all morning about what they were going to tell the doctor.  Katie was excited to show her the scrape on her knee while Charlotte kept saying “I’m going to tell the doctor my tummy hurts!”  EYE DOCTOR girls.  EYE doctor.

5.  Bed Time Stalling.  This is such CLASSIC kid behavior.  Bedtime has slowly gotten longer and longer because there is a laundry list of things that must be done before they will finally lay down and go to sleep.  And they must be done not once or twice but over and over.  Both girls need to feel the air coming out of the air conditioner, look out the window to see if it’s dark, hug mommy, hug daddy, kiss daddy, kiss mommy, hug mommy again, have their blanket put on, one more hug, blanket put on again, one more kiss, say Sweet Dreams Mommy! ok I love you Mommy, wait I love you again Mommy, say sweet dreams, okay, one more time……

They get me with the “I love you Mommy” though.  Every night, even after I’ve closed their door and walked away, I can still hear Charlotte saying “I love you Mommy!” and Katie saying “Sweet dreams Mommy! Night night!”

Some things really never can be repeated too often.

Just wait 'till they learn the one about "Pete & Repeat." ("Pete & Repeat were in a boat. Pete fell out. Who was left? Repeat. Pete & Repeat were in a boat...")

I've been a long time reader but don't comment often (sorry!) but just had to on this one. (my twins are just a bit older than your kiddos)

While we're not caught in the movie repeat (mostly just b/c they aren't home enough to do so - in daycare), I can totally relate to the music, knock knock jokes and more! In fact, I just blogged about their "going nowhere" knock knock jokes yesterday!

Its definitely a stage...lets hope we all make it through!

I hear you on the boo boo thing! I teach first grade and some of the kids complain about EVERYTHING. I had a girl come and tell me her belly button hurt. 30 minutes later it was a little freckle, and then it was her hair (I didn't know hair could hurt?!). This is all day every day!

By the way, your girls are so adorable! I love reading your blog1

I feel like I could've written this entry, almost word for word. I have watched the movie "Cars" more times than i care to count. We have a CD from last summer's Kindermusik class that's on repeat. And my son loves to "dance," and one more round of "Ring Around the Rosy" will make me too dizzy to stand up. And the boo boos! Oh, the boo boos! lol

I keep reminding myself: "This, too, shall pass."

I've been reading for a while, but have never commented. Oops, sorry.

Anyway, my son is one day younger than your kids and we're going through this exact thing right now too. In fact, we have that same Little People CD!

I just love your blog and writing style!

We also have the Little Peoples CD... both the yellow and purple ones and my 3 year old loves them! Fortunately, he also likes classic Disney music which is infinitely cooler, of course. =)

Your children are beautiful and you capture their personalities (or so it seems as I don't know them IRL!) so well in your blog. Thanks for always bringing a smile to my face with your wonderful posts! =)

Sooo cute! And sooo grown up! They are getting big. I really enjoy reading about all of the things they are doing so I know what is coming up with my baby! :D

Haha, I have no kids myself, but I have 6 nieces and nephews, which have allowed me to babysit OH so many times. During the summer breaks I became the family nanny, so everyone else could go to work. One summer my sisters oldest was seriously obsessed about the Teletubbies. There is only so many times you can see the giggling sun-baby and say goodbye as the tubbies hide. One fond memoryo f this is with my brothers oldest though. I got hooked on The Lion King, which is ne of my favourite movies too, so I gladly watched it. Well, parts of it. Both of us found it was a much better movie if we fast forwarded (VHS, good old days) through the sad and scary scenes. Hakuna Matata!

Thought I'd share a new CD for you to maybe introduce the girls to....Raffi is an amazing children's artist that sings all kinds of fun songs that they can sing along to. And the best part is...he isn't super annoying to the parents :)
